When Perseus beheaded Medusa, which Poseidon had made pregnant, Chrysaoras, Gyrione's father, and Pegasus, the winged horse, sprang from the incision. According to one testimony, Pegasus was born from the blood that fell into the sea. Then Perseus on horseback succeeded in eluding the pursuit of the other two Gorgons, brothers of Medusa, or, in the more common form of the fable, with his winged sandals. Pegasus was therefore the son of Poseidon and Medusa.
